The narrative and tone, inspired by Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness and Dashiell Hammett's novel Red Harvest, focused on the lengths to which people would go to survive through terrible circumstances. Director Clint Hocking conceived the setting and design, which he wanted to be more realistic than the original Far Cry (2004). Production took three and a half years, with concept work beginning during the production of Far Cry Instincts (2005). A competitive multiplayer mode allows players to fight in teams or as individuals. The player navigates the open world, completing missions for factions and allies called Buddies while managing their health and equipment. Set in a fictional East African country engulfed in civil war, the storyline follows a mercenary who is assigned to kill the Jackal, a weapons dealer inflaming the conflict. It is the second mainline entry in the Far Cry series. A top-down shooter version for mobile phones was developed and published by Gameloft.

OBJECTIVE // Kill the scouts at the safe house to unlock it. Outside the building, open the hood of the yellow car and fix it. OBJECTIVE // Pop the hood and fix the car. Take the assault rifle and the flamethrower on the table, and use the first-aid kit on the wall.
Follow more tutorial prompts for performing first-aid treatment and for saving. The guy who saves Far Cry Dude's butt now gets to boss him around. OBJECTIVE // Pick up guns and take syrettes from the kit on the wall. Getting wasted at this point is okay, because this is a part of the story. If Far Cry Dude doesn't get mowed down in a hail of gunfire, he will keel over due to his illness. Fight through the streets as much as possible. Follow the tutorial prompts and exit the building. Before he can get out of bed, he meets the Jackal, who shows up to mumble off a bit and then vanishes just as fighting erupts in the streets outside. The hero, Far Cry Dude, arrives at the town only to succumb to a bout of malaria.
